Licensed archaeological testing at Ballylin, Co. Limerick was undertaken over one day in the beginning of June 2024. The proposed development site (PDS) is situated within the zone of notification of the site of a recorded Enclosure, LI028-088. A series of six test trenches (T1-T6) extending for c.205m were opened across the PDS. Topsoil was incrementally removed under archaeological supervision using a 13-ton machine with a flat 1.9m-wide grading bucket. The four radial trenches (T1-T4) were excavated in the immediate vicinity of the enclosure to try and establish if any of the monument survives subsurface.
Testing revealed no evidence of the enclosure ditch or any other associated feature. The subsurface remains of an old field boundary, depicted on 25’’ OS map, was recorded in T4. Nothing of archaeological interest was recorded in any other trenches and no artefacts were recovered during testing.
