A programme of archaeological monitoring of groundworks to facilitate the erection of a 24m high lattice tower together with antennas, dishes and associated telecommunications equipment all enclosed in security fencing and extension to an existing track at Knockouragh, Carraig More Townand, to the south of Doon, Co. Limerick was undertaken. The tower site is just outside the Zone of Notification (ZoN) for LI025-007----, an Earthwork. The track extension will be partially within the ZoN for the monument.
The site is located on an elevated ridge with a west-facing gradual slope and wide views to the west and north. The northern and western sides of the subject area are bordered by a line of mature trees with an open field to the south and east.
Archaeological monitoring was carried out on 18 January 2024 in dry and sunny conditions. An area measuring roughly 16m x 16m was stripped to facilitate the tower and a 5m wide access track machine topsoil stripped to the west and south following the line of an existing rough farm track and the mature treeline. Approximately 250mm of topsoil and sod was removed to underlying natural undisturbed deposits. The stratigraphy comprised a mid-brown topsoil and sod directly overlying a mid-brown sandy silty clay. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted. No further archaeological mitigation is required
