A programme of archaeological test-trenching was undertaken at Kilderry, Johnswell, Co. Kilkenny from 8 to 18 April 2024. These works were undertaken in relation to a proposed solar farm development.
Geophysical surveys were undertaken, the results of which informed the layout of the trenches. Trenches targeted any geophysical anomalies of archaeological potential, along with any proposed ground reduction areas for the development (access roads, transformer locations, site compounds etc).
The programme of archaeological testing comprised the excavation of a total of 140 test-trenches. To aid the recording process, the proposed development area was divided into fields 1-17. The trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed development to assess the potential for subsurface archaeological remains. Thirty-six pits, three stake-holes, eleven burnt mound deposits, two curvilinear features, one bank, one ring-ditch and one curving ditch were identified during testing.
