Test excavations were carried out at Old Connell, Newbridge, Co. Kildare from 15-17 July 2024.
A total of 12 test trenches measuring c. 830 linear metres were excavated across the footprint of the site with the depth of the topsoil ranging between 0.4m and 0.95m. The natural varied between a light grey to a light orangey brown sand with occasional poorly-sorted pebbles. Various light greyish-brown and mottled orange and grey sandy silt deposits were also recorded. Bands of gravel with rounded stones were also present. No archaeological features were identified.
Agricultural furrows aligned north-west/south-east were noted in the trenches and these had previously been identified in the geophysical survey (23R0184; Murphy, 2023).
The topsoil was examined for finds, and no material was recovered. It was concluded that the development will have no archaeological impact.
