Licensed archaeological testing in Knockawaddra West townland was undertaken in February 2024. A series of 17 linear test trenches (T1 – T17) extending for c.1670m were opened across the proposed development with a 14t track machine using a 1.8m wide flat grading bucket under archaeological supervision. Stratigraphy was very similar in all trenches comprising of an average depth of 0.2-0.3m of mid-greyish-brown, very organic or peaty topsoil overlaying mostly orange or grey clay subsoil with very few natural stone inclusions.
Nothing of archaeological interest was noted or recorded in any of the trenches. No artefacts or any finds were found during the trenching excavation.
