Archaeological testing at Ballyconnell, Kilflyn took place in one day at the beginning of May 2024 with regard to a planning application to construct 12 dwelling houses. A series of 5 linear east-west orientated test trenches (T1-T5), extending for c.290m were opened across the site. Topsoil was incrementally removed under archaeological supervision using 8-tonne track machine with 1.9m flat grading bucket.
Stratigraphy was very similar in all trenches comprising of an average depth of 0.3-0.4m of dark to mid-brown topsoil overlaying mostly light greyish-yellow to orange sandy clay subsoil with various amounts of stone inclusions. A stone drain was noted in T1 traversing through most of the trench running east-west. Some introduced material (up to 0.6m depth), most probably from construction of Phase 1 of the estate, was recorded in the east end of T4 and in T5.
Nothing of an archaeological nature was noted in any of the test trenches and no artefacts were recovered.
