Watermains rehabilitation works were carried out in Fossa townland on behalf of Uisce Éireann between December 2023 and February 2024. As the works would impact the Zone of Notification for Recorded Monument KE066-011---- (Standing stone), monitoring of trench excavations in this location was recommended by the National Monuments Service.
The Contractor used a 14t tracked mechanical excavator to excavate a single continuous 0.7m wide trench to a depth of 1.3m, for approximately 100m, along the edge of the N72 road. The monitoring archaeologist was in attendance during excavation works within the Zone of Notification.
The type of ground encountered was natural gravels, with no evidence for cultural deposits prior to the road surfacing, and no archaeology was found during the works.
