2024:896 - Lisnabrack, Park, Galway

A new dwelling was proposed on the site of an out-of-use house due for demolition in Park townland, Moycullen. The proposed new house and driveway come within the constraint zone for an Early Ecclesiastical Enclosure (GA055-062—-) with a smaller internal enclosure (GA055-062001-) containing a Childrens’ Burial Ground. A small part of the enclosing ecclesiastical element appears to encroach into the north sector of the proposed development field and this area is free of development. The large ecclesiastical enclosure is cut in two by the L1313 road with no trace on the east side of the road; it is named Lisnabrack (speckled fort) on 1923 6″ OS map, and with a rough north-south diameter of 60m. There was one and possibly two buildings within the south interior on 1898 OS map and in recent times large bonfires in this sector covered an area of c. 44m square. The highest internal ground is occupied by a smaller enclosure (20m diam.) used as a burial ground for children and named Lisnatrinode (fort of the Trinity) on most recent OS maps. No archaeology turned up from the seven test trenches excavated here.
