2024:886 - Queen Street, Townparks, Galway, Galway

Archaeological monitoring was carried on a development site at Queen Street, Galway, between February and June 2024. Monitoring revealed that much of the site is heavily contaminated as a result of the operation of a gasworks here throughout the 19^th and first half of the 20^th centuries, and the subsequent demolition of the gasworks infrastructure in the second half of the 20th century. There were traces of the grey/brown clayey silt deposit (frequently black as a result of contamination) that was recorded during monitoring of site investigations in May 2023 (2023:457), and considered to be the estuarine silt that accumulated in this tidal area prior to land reclamation in the early 19^th century. The deposit was found to be sterile apart from very occasional inclusions of shell. A post-medieval clay pipe stem fragment and a single sherd of late/post-medieval pottery were the only finds from this deposit. No archaeology was found.
