Archaeological monitoring was carried on a development site at Queen Street, Galway, between February and June 2024. Monitoring revealed that much of the site is heavily contaminated as a result of the operation of a gasworks here throughout the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and the subsequent demolition of the gasworks infrastructure in the second half of the 20th century. There were traces of the grey/brown clayey silt deposit (frequently black as a result of contamination) that was recorded during monitoring of site investigations in May 2023 (2023:457), and considered to be the estuarine silt that accumulated in this tidal area prior to land reclamation in the early 19th century. The deposit was found to be sterile apart from very occasional inclusions of shell. A post-medieval clay pipe stem fragment and a single sherd of late/post-medieval pottery were the only finds from this deposit. No archaeology was found.
