Archaeological test trenching was undertaken on the site of a proposed industrial development in Demesne townland in Tuam. The site of Recorded Monument GA029-066 (Kiln - lime) is within the boundaries of the development site, however a site visit carried out in 1985 by the Archaeological Survey of Ireland found no evidence of the monument surviving above ground level.

Seven test trenches were excavated which revealed the site to have been heavily disturbed by terracing and truncated by modern services. Of the seven trenches excavated, only two retained original stratigraphy, where topsoil, 0.4-0.6m thick, overlay glacial till. Two trenches were targeted to the location of the lime kiln and ‘Iceland House’ (annotated on historic mapping in approximately the same location). Large pieces of concrete slab may have derived from the house but equally could represent more general waste dumping. No evidence for the lime kiln was seen in this heavily-disturbed area.

No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were observed in any of the test trenches. In summary nothing of archaeological significance was identified.
