2024:594 - Castlepark and Meheranspark, Kilchreest, Galway

Archaeological monitoring of groundworks at the site of a single house development that straddles the boundary of Castlepark and Meheranspark townlands did not identify archaeological features, deposits or artefacts.

The development site lies on the opposite side of the road to a medieval church (GA114-097001) and graveyard (GA114-097003), and partly within the associated Zone of Notification. A buffer zone extending 25m from the edge of the graveyard was left undeveloped within the site. Elsewhere topsoil 0.1-0.2m thick overlay glacial till with frequent limestone cobbles and smaller stones. After the removal of topsoil the gravel base for a farm track was observed on the Castlepark side of the old townland boundary wall, leading between the existing gate onto the road into a field to the south of the development site.
