Uisce Éireann’s Connection Developer Services scheme at Dungory West, Kinvara, was located in Dungory West and Dungory East townlands, County Galway. The scheme involved the installation of c.270m of new foul sewer line and associated infrastructure including foul sewer manholes along the existing roads N67 and R347. The scheme extends from the existing pumping station within the castle carpark to a proposed foul sewer manhole on the R347. The installation method used was open-cut trenching.
The monitoring followed a high-level Cultural Heritage Screening Assessment (CHSA) undertaken for the scheme by Archaeological Management Solutions. The CHSA found that the proposed scheme would not impact any sites or monuments recorded on the Sites and Monuments Record or the Record of Monuments and Places. However, due to its proximity to the Zone of Notification for Recorded Monuments GA113-124---- (Dungory Castle) and GA113-125---- (castle-tower house), and to the intertidal zone of Kinvara Bay, an area of archaeological potential was identified along the coastal road section of the proposed scheme.
The archaeological monitoring was carried out between 14 May and 7 October 2024.
Excavation of four trial holes and a continuous open-cut trench totalling c.196m within an area of archaeological potential along the scheme route was monitored.
No potential archaeological objects, features or deposits were found during the monitoring of the scheme route.
