The test excavation of a site in advance of its development at Barrack Street in Dunmore, Co. Galway, was carried out on 27 May 2024. The project consisted of a mixed commercial/residential development. The testing was necessary as the site was located within the constraint for the medieval town of Dunmore (RMP GA017-002) and was carried out as part of the planning process. The proposed development site consisted of an open yard with the outline of the walls of a building(s), clearly visible on the ground surface across the site area.

The testing consisted of the excavation of three trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development. The trenches measured 13.7m, 17.6m and 29.1m long respectively; 2-2.7m wide and 0.35-1.8m deep. The spoil from each trench was inspected for artefacts and was surveyed with a metal detector.

The pre-development testing revealed evidence of buildings and associated services, dating to the 19th and 20th centuries, and nothing of archaeological significance.
