Test excavation was carried out at Kilmeen Mill, a derelict post-medieval corn mill (GA106-107----), at Kilmeen, Loughrea, Co. Galway, in September 2024. The work was carried out in advance of clearance, and drainage works as part of conservation works funded by the Heritage Council’s Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme.
Seven test pits were excavated at the site to assess the depth of the foundations of the building and to determine if any floor surfaces survived in the building. The walls were determined to have foundations of between 0.1m and 0.55m deep. One half of the building had a very rough stone floor while the other had no formal floor. The results of the test excavation will inform further conservation of the building.
