The scheme involved the installation of 1,053m of rehabilitated water mains and 298m of new mains along the existing unnamed local road (L5203). The scheme also included the decommissioning of 299m of pipeline located primarily through greenfield; however, due to the nature of decommissioning works, no impact was predicted. The construction technique used was open-cut trenching. Excavation of c.150m of open-cut trenching was monitored in order to identify any subsurface archaeological objects, features or deposits that may have been present.
The monitoring followed a high-level Cultural Heritage Screening Report (CHSR) undertaken for the scheme by Archaeological Management Solutions (AMS) in December 2023 (AMS 2023). The CHSR found that the schemes would not impact any Recorded Monuments or sites listed on the Sites and Monuments Record. However, the report recommended – as a precaution – to monitor under licence from the National Monuments Service any ground excavation works to be carried out for the construction works for the scheme along c.150m section of the scheme, in proximity to a watercourse/townland boundary (CH04), due to potential for archaeological remains to be present at this location.
The archaeological monitoring was carried out intermittently by Alan Healy and Ros Ó Maoldúin of AMS between 7 March 2024 and 2 May 2024.
No potential archaeological objects, features and deposits were found during the monitoring of the Baile na mBrabach scheme’s route.
