A programme of archaeological monitoring took place of excavations associated with the construction of 2 new chambers built on existing 1200mm and 700mm sewage lines to allow diversion of effluent from the 700mm line to connect into the 1200mm Line at Claddagh Quay, Galway City.

The works were located within the vicinity of the zones of notification for several archaeological sites associated with a 15th-century Dominican priory (Religious House GA094-091-- & Graveyard GA094-091001--) and a Premonstratensian Chapel (GA094-091002--). The subject site is also located within the overall Zone of Notification for the historic town of Galway (GA094-100---).

The site is on the Claddagh Quay Road, Galway City and overlooks the Quay and Galway’s ‘Latin Quarter’ to the northeast.

An area measuring roughly 6m x 6m was excavated to facilitate the two chambers and the diversion of a gas mains. The stratigraphy comprised tarmacadam and modern fill to a depth of between 250mm and 400mm. This overlay an earlier rubble fill comprising large boulders and large and medium-sized stones in a gravelly sandy silt. Two substantial concrete pipes running roughly parallel north to south were observed in the base of the trench at a depth of 2m. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
