A programme of archaeological monitoring of excavations associated with the demolition of a substandard building and construction of a new 3-storey building and all associated works to accommodate Galway Rape Crisis Centre at no. 7, Claddagh Quay, Galway City was carried out in January 2024. The subject site is located within the zone of notification (ZoN) for several sites associated with a 15th-century Dominican priory (Religious House GA094-091-- & Graveyard GA094-091001--) and a Premonstratensian Chapel, GA094-091002--. It is also located within the overall ZoN for the historic town of Galway (GA094-100---).
The site overlooks the Quay and Galway’s ‘Latin Quarter’ to the northeast. The southern and western sides of the site are bordered by adjacent buildings, and a laneway leads west to the rear of the Galway Fire Station to the north of the site. Prior to excavation the existing building had been demolished.
Archaeological monitoring was carried out on 26th January 2024 in dry and sunny conditions. An area measuring roughly 7m X 7m was excavated to facilitate a raft foundation. The stratigraphy comprised a deposit of rubble and modern fill to a depth of between 250mm and 400mm (the limit of excavations) throughout. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
