IAC Archaeology conducted a programme of archaeological testing prior to proposed industrial development at Grangecastle West, Loughtown Upper and Milltown, County Dublin (Figure 1). The report was carried out in order to inform a planning application for the site under assessment.

Testing follows a previous phase of geophysical survey, carried out across the development area in 2018. The survey identified several possible archaeological features including a suspected ring ditch, linear anomalies and a number of small pit-type features.

Archaeological testing was carried out over the course of ten days from 9 January 2024. The trenches targeted geophysical anomalies and open green space. Testing revealed two areas of archaeological significance, which have been designated as Archaeological Areas 1 and 2. These comprise three possible pits, two of which were found to contain a fill of heat-affected stone. No dating evidence was recovered from any of the features, which have the potential to date from the prehistoric period onwards. The remainder of the site produced extensive evidence of former farm systems and land drainage. These primarily took the form of furrows and extensive quantities of post-medieval and modern field drains, of varying orientations and construction.
