| Archaeological testing was undertaken at Baggotrath Road, Newbridge Avenue, Sandymount Dublin 4. The development area is a large site, measuring c. half a hectare (4,955sq.m), off Newbridge Road, just opposite the River Dodder and the Aviva Stadium. It is located at the site of Baggotrath House, Newbridge Avenue, and it currently contains a detached single-storey property known as 11 Newbridge Drive. The topography of the site is predominantly flat with a slight fall in elevation from the south to the north, at an average gradient of 5%.The surrounding area is primarily residential in nature. The site is bounded to the north by a residential cul-de-sac, Newbridge Drive, to the east and by the back gardens of residences along Tritonville Road, to the south by Herbert Mews (accessed off Herbert Road) and to the west by existing residences and an apartment block accessed via a laneway. The development area includes an existing dwelling and surrounding garden that will be demolished/cleared in advance of the permitted development.
There are no recorded monuments and sites within the area of the development; however, the zone of notification of a recorded monument, a possible bridge site (DU018-056), is located immediately west of the site. Additionally, a cluster of recorded monuments is located c. 320m to the north of the site and include: a settlement cluster (DU018-054), a church (DU018-0540001) and its graveyard (DU018-0540002). The site is also adjacent to a former distillery site which is listed on the Dublin City Industrial Heritage Record. Test trenching took place on 21 October 2024. A total of six trenches were excavated across the site measuring 232 linear metres. With the exception of some furrows and pits of late 19th- and 20th-century date, no feature of archaeological significance was uncovered during the archaeological testing. |
