Testing took place at this site. The RMP maps show a lot of prehistoric activity in the surrounding landscape to the south of the site. There is a former castle site c.230-270m southeast of the site.
Ireland’s waterways, both marine and freshwater, have been central to the development of life on this island. The proximity to a river (Deansgrange Stream) and the former pond site shown in the first and second edition OS maps gives this site potential to have other cultural remains such as prehistoric fulachtaí fiadh etc.
Given the rich archaeological landscape surrounding the site and the proximity to a water source it is recommended that archaeological monitoring/site inspections are carried out during the excavation phase of the deeper areas of the site to be excavated, such as the lower pond, the upper pond and the upper treatment areas.
