A programme of archaeological test-trenching and monitoring was undertaken at 6–12 Sackville Place, Dublin between May and July 2024. These works were undertaken for DMOD Architects on behalf of A Star Backpackers. The proposed development will comprise a contemporary tourist hostel and all associated site development works on 0.07 ha of lands.

The programme of archaeological works comprised the excavation of nine test-trenches (TT) and monitoring of excavation for underpinning during site clearance. Test-trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed development to assess the potential for sub-surface archaeological remains. Seven were excavated within the existing basement, and two excavated to the south. The test excavations indicate no archaeologically significant structures, features or deposits are present on site, with the existing basement removing any such material across most of the site. Material to the south of the existing basement appears to be demolition debris laid down to level the site to modern ground level. A single sherd of recovered glazed red earthenware tentatively dates this to the late 17th to 19th century at the earliest. Monitoring identified a section of wall in the north-east of the development that is possibly of late 17th to 18th century date, along with a deposit that continues under the adjacent plot to the east.
