The monitoring of groundworks within the area of the garden and former mews of 3 Henrietta Street, confirmed some of the information on the Ordnance Survey mapping and Rocque 1756/7, through the survival of the 18th- and 19th century
remains.
The ground reduction uncovered 18th- and 19th-century walls running west to east. They are likely associated with different phases of structures shown in 1756 and 1847.
The surviving northernmost walls most closely aligned with the 19th-century maps – the site was constricted between 1756 and 1847, probably for access purposes and the northern building moved from the east to the west.
The presence of cobbled surfaces, throughout the site also reflected the different configurations of structures in the plot. Cobbles in the north-west corner may suggest a potential stabling use for the structure on the 1847 map, but this may originally have been the yard surface on Rocque. The pads C010 to C012, suggest the possibility of an open front along the east-facing façade of the northernmost building in the 1847 map. The remains were heavily damaged due to later demolition but corresponding joist holes in the western boundary wall were observed.
Another subdivision, possibly later, constructed of yellow brick, corresponds to a structural division on the 1847 and 1864 plans. An external boundary garden wall, C013, on the eastern and northern side, was uncovered with a surface or ramp under the concrete layer to the east, C016.
Limited areas of natural ground, a firm yellowish sandy clay, were found at 0.6m to 1.2m below the hardcore.
