Archaeological monitoring took place in Spring and Summer of 2024 as part of restoration works to the collapsed gate arch and unstable wall of Killiney Church and Graveyard. This is a historic graveyard which is listed on the Record of Monuments and Places. The aim of the archaeological works was to ensure that the conservation and building works do not cause any disturbance to the archaeological monument or to human remains.
An unstable 5m section of the wall in the north of the graveyard was fully recorded and carefully dismantled. Two trenches were excavated by hand to provide a foundation for a rebuilt section of graveyard wall. Human remains were identified along the southern side of the trenches, but were not impacted upon by the rebuilt wall. No archaeological features were identified. The wall was rebuilt and is now stable.
