Archaeological test trenching was carried out at a site located at Chapel Lane, Garristown, Co. Dublin in May 2024. The site is located in the south-east portion of Garristown. An existing GAA pitch occupies the western field.
The proposed test trenching was to be carried out in fulfilment of the condition attached to a Planning permission from Fingal County Council.
The site contains no monuments as listed in the Record of Monuments and Places (RMP). It is located outside and to the east of the zone of archaeological potential associated with Garristown Settlement cluster (DU003-011----). The proposed development was deemed large-scale in extent and located in an area of high archaeological potential, hence requiring archaeological mitigation. There are no Protected Structures, as listed in the Fingal Development Plan 2023–2029, nor sites listed in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH), within the site.
A total of 13 test trenches were excavated, each trench measuring 1.8m in width and to a depth of between 0.35m to 0.7m, exposing a variety of natural subsoil deposits. A total of 1,101m of linear trenches were excavated through what are now three large fields in pasture. Test trenches were excavated to a depth of between 0.35m to 0.7m, exposing a variety of natural subsoil deposits.
No archaeological structures, features, or deposits were identified in the excavated test trenches. No further archaeological mitigation is therefore recommended.
