It was proposed upgrade the existing sewer network in the environs of the village of Kilmacrennan in County Donegal under the overall Donegal Towns & Villages – Contract No. 3 Kilmacrennan, Carrigart and Mountcharles Sewage Scheme
Due to unforeseen design and construction issues it became necessary to expand the area of the proposed development works to the north and east of the existing WwTp. On receipt of the planning application for the proposed site expansion, the Development Applications Unit of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage recommended that a phase of pre-development testing take place. This work was carried out on 2 October 2024. Topsoil stripping in the areas of the proposed works extensions to the north and east of the existing treatment plant at Kilmacrennan were archaeologically monitored. Some tree root disturbance was noted running along the northern boundary of the old works compound and evidence was uncovered for modern concrete-filled post-holes, marking the eastern extent of the works. In addition, a larger area along the northern side of the extension area was monitored in the location of the proposed temporary tanks. As nothing of archaeological interest was noted in the course of the archaeological monitoring, and as it was additionally confirmed that the temporary haul road to the north was no longer required, it was recommended, subject to the approval of the relevant authorities, that works be allowed to proceed without the requirement for further archaeological involvement at the Kilmacrennan project.
