Archaeological monitoring was carried out of 19 Utility Verification Areas (ST1-21) located at Raphoe Townparks, Raphoe Demesne, Sesnacully, Magheraboy, Magherasollus, Difflin, Gortaquigley, Raphoe, Co. Donegal. The monitoring was to be carried out in relation to Raphoe Flood Relief Scheme (planning exempt) in order to locate existing services. The site was subject to a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey that located the existing services within Utility Verification Areas and the slit trenches (ST) were excavated to confirm the GPR results in order to locate the services and their depth.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified. Excavations within roadways identified various layers of road surface above layers of hardcore and redeposited modern clays above the natural subsoil. Excavations within green areas consisted of sod and topsoil above thin redeposited clay and subsoil. Various services were identified.
The works are now complete and have succeeded in identifying the location and depths of services.
