Uisce Éireann’s Water Network Programme Carnatreantagh Church scheme was located in Drumcavany, Carrick, Carnatreantagh and Treanbeg townlands, County Donegal. The scheme involved the installation of c.1,646m of rehabilitated water mains and 338m of proposed mains along the existing road (L6412). The installation methods used were open-cut trenching and horizontal directional drilling.
The monitoring followed a high-level Cultural Heritage Screening Assessments (CHSA) undertaken for the scheme by Archaeological Management Solutions. The CHSA found that the proposed scheme would not impact the Zone of Notification or Zone of Archaeological Potential for any Recorded Monuments or sites listed on the Sites and Monuments Record. The CHSA proposed monitoring as a precaution in the vicinity of the following areas of archaeological potential: CH01 (Leannan River), CH02 (flax mill, site of), CH03 and CH04 (mill races), CH05 and CH11 (watercourses/townland boundaries), CH07 (potential well, site of), CH10 (pipe, site of) and CH12 (watercourse) due to potential for archaeological remains to be present at these locations.
Excavation of a section of continuous open-cut trench totalling c.200m along the scheme route were monitored intermittently between 8 July and 8 August 2024.
No potential archaeological objects, features, deposits or human remains were found during the monitoring of the scheme route
