Test excavations were carried out west of Tamney Village, Co. Donegal in November 2024. A total of 10 test trenches were excavated across the footprint of the site with the depth of the topsoil ranging between 0.3m and 0.8m. The natural subsoil varied between a light orangish-brown clay with gravels in the lower ground levels to orangey-brown coloured gravels and sand and a light grey silty sand and natural gravel and with broken larger stone in a grey clay deposit in the higher ground to the northeast.
A field boundary ditch orientated north-south, which corresponded with a field boundary ditch marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey (OS) 6-inch map (surveyed 1833 - published 1836), was identified in trenches T11 and T12. Other agricultural features observed were stone-filled land drains.
No archaeological features were identified. As a result, the development will have no archaeological impact.
There were twenty-two pottery sherds recovered from the site, with all being found in the topsoil. These were likely introduced during agricultural manuring and are early modern in date (late 18th – mid 19th century).
Test trenching did not identify any archaeological features or deposits. The topsoil was examined for finds, and all objects recovered were early modern in date. All archaeological investigations are now complete, and no further mitigation is recommended.
