Archaeological investigations (test trenching) were carried out ahead of a proposed development at Lifford Common, Lifford, Co. Donegal in April of 2024. A total of 11 test trenches were excavated across the footprint of the site with the depth of the topsoil ranging between 0.12m and 0.70m. The natural varied between an orangish-brown clay and a yellowish-brown clay with varying inclusions. No archaeological features were identified, with only modern agricultural
features such as furrows and land drains observed.
Pottery sherds from the site have all been found in the topsoil. These were likely introduced during the digging of the stone-filled land drains. All are late white earthenwares, stone ware and occasional china.
Test trenching did not identify any archaeological features or deposits. The only features present in the excavated trenches were modern agricultural features such as furrows and land drains. The topsoil was examined for finds, and all objects recovered were post-medieval or modern in date. As a result, the development will have no archaeological impact.
All archaeological investigations are now complete, and no further mitigation is required.
