The area under archaeological testing is located at Abbeylands, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. The proposed development works entail the construction of three houses in a greenfield site overlooking Abbey Bay.  In accordance with the request for archaeological assessment, test trenching took place on 30 March 2024.
Test trenching comprised three linear trenches mechanically excavated across the entire development area which comprised one large south-facing elongated grass-covered field in use as pasture. During the testing programme no archaeological features, artefacts or deposits were observed in Test Trenches 1 and 2.
In Test Trench 3 a feature of possible archaeological potential was observed at 28m from the northern end of the trench, 3m from the eastern boundary and located at ITM E586695/N862433. The feature consisted of a shallow, kidney-shaped spread or possible hearth as evidenced by heat-affected fire-reddened soil, with charcoal and a small fragment of burnt bone.
