The monitoring of groundworks at a quarry development in Carrownamaddy townland, 3km west north-west of Creeslough in County Donegal, was carried out by the writer between 3 and 11 January 2024. The monitoring was a condition of the planning permission for the development and was necessary due to the size of the development area.
The development site was located in an upland area, covered in blanket bog, a short distance north of Muckish Mountain and adjacent to an existing quarry. The ground surface was covered in heather with some rock outcrop visible in places. A number of drains crossed the site. There were no recorded monument located in the vicinity of the development site.
The groundworks consisted of the excavation of the peat bog down to the bedrock or natural subsoil, across an area which measured 92-107m north-south, 109-222.5m east-west and up to 1.8m deep. The stratigraphy encountered during the monitoring was peat above natural subsoils and bedrock. The peat measured 0.15-1.8m thick. No artefacts were recovered. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
