Archaeological testing was carried out on a vacant plot formerly occupied by steel farm buildings, most of which had recently been cleared. Steel sheds lay against the western site boundary, but the remainder of the site was empty. The subject site lay wholly within the Zone of Notification for Bruhenny Church and Graveyard (RMP CO016-056001- & CO016-056002-), and the client requested that the author undertake an archaeological assessment to ascertain whether there would be any archaeological implications should the site be developed in the future.
Six trenches were mechanically excavated across the available site area, but no archaeology was found. An elderly neighbour stated that he recalled a former owner of the property using the eastern part of the site to cultivate vegetables, and the remainder to store machinery and farm equipment, both of which could explain the various non-archaeological features noted in the test trenches. It is probable therefore, that this site has remained undeveloped since the earliest formation of the village.
