Archaeological monitoring took place in January 2024 at two locations along a roughly 10km long watermains upgrade project being carried out by contractors working on behalf of Uisce Éireann, between the town of Mallow, and the village of Killavullen, in north County Cork.
The first of two monitoring areas was at Ballyellis, near Mallow, where the route of the pipeline passed through the Zone of Notification for a ringfort. No archaeology was found.
In Killavullen village, the pipeline passed through the Zone of Notification for a Church, and earlier works here had revealed the presence of a possible Bronze Age burnt mound or fulacht fiadh below the road surface. The works were halted for a time to allow for discussions to take place as to how best to proceed with minimal impact. The route of the pipeline was subsequently extended beyond the suspected monument, thereby bypassing it as best as possible. No other archaeology was found.
