The groundworks associated with the Bandon FRS – Hydrometric Station were subject to archaeological monitoring, which included the excavation of a pipe trench. The material removed measured up to 0.9m. To facilitate the work, the upper portion of the embankment was removed and sandbags were used to
restrict the water level within the groundworks area. Riverbed gravels with small and large water-rolled pebbles measuring between 0.15-0.2m in depth were removed onto the bedrock. Subsequently, a breaker was used. The area of groundworks and spoils removed was scanned with a metal detector, a Garrett
ATX; there were no responses requiring further investigation.
The work is now complete. No further archaeological mitigation is required.
