Archaeological monitoring was carried out during the construction of an extension to 27 Tuckey Street within the footprint of Bishop Lucey Park. Material was excavated to a depth of approximately 1.4m below ground level and an additional 0.335m within the lift pit. Sixteen reinforced concrete piles (dating from the 1980s) were exposed within the extension footprint as well as the foundation for the northern wall of the Freemasons’ Hall. Approximately 1m of modern fill overlay layers of post-medieval brown-black silty clay containing occasional animal bone, charcoal and shell. A random rubble stone drain was identified cutting theses clay layers at the northwest of the trench which contained a clay pipe fragment.
