Monitoring was required for a single house development in Big Marsh, just to the south of Church Cross, Cork. The development site consisted of a triangular field of unimproved grazing in a low-lying marshy area close to the River Ilen estuary. Monitoring was required due to its proximity to a souterrain (CO141-100–) located c.60m to the southwest. A buffer zone was initially established in a portion of the site closest to the monument.
A misunderstanding with the developer meant half the area had already been stripped at the time of monitoring. The remaining areas were monitored including the waste and percolation locations. A general stratigraphy was recorded consisting of between 0.2m and 0.4m of a dark grey/brown topsoil overlying grey boulder clays containing stones and gravels. No archaeology was found.
