Test excavation was carried out on the site of a proposed single dwelling house to the north of Donoughmore. This consisted of a a parcel of land within a larger area of improved pasture, overlooking the Shournagh River valley to the northeast. Testing was required due to its proximity to a burial ground (CO050-089–) located to the south, on the other side of the public road. It is suggested by this author that the burial ground mentioned could have been the result of the discovery of a souterrain rather than a burial ground.
8 trenches were excavated over the footprint of the proposed development with a combined length of 140m. A general stratigraphy was recorded of between 0.2-0.4m of mid-grey/brown topsoil overlying variable boulder clay. Occasional plough marks were noted. No archaeology was found.
