Archaeological testing of the site of a proposed Grid Stability Service Development at Aughinida, Macroom, County Cork was undertaken in November 2024 in order to comply with an RFI from Cork County Council in relation to the proposed development.
The testing programme comprised the excavation of 18 archaeological test trenches, totalling 1265m in length, across the footprint of proposed development site. The testing programme revealed that the anomalies recorded during a geophysical survey (23R0132) undertaken in 2023 had evidently been caused by natural geological variations and disturbance associated with land improvement activity. While evidence of modern agricultural and land improvement activities was uncovered in many of the excavated trenches, nothing of archaeological significance was revealed during the archaeological testing programme.
