An archaeological test excavation was undertaken at the proposed location for a new Waste Water Treatment Plant in Ballineen village. Five test trenches were excavated across the area proposed for development and no features or finds of archaeological significance were uncovered. The field proposed for development is almost 2m below the level of the public road to the north. The test excavation indicated that the lands proposed for development may have been deliberately reduced during the construction of the West Cork Railway which forms the southern boundary to the site.
