A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken between January 23 and February 26, 2024, to facilitate the installation of a new watermain, domestic and/or commercial property connections, and installation/replacement of hydrants and valves in the townlands of Crookhaven and Ballynaule, Co. Cork. Archaeological monitoring was required within the Zones of Notification of six Recorded Monuments crossed by the works:

  • CO147-058001- (Graveyard),
  • CO0147-058002- (Church),
  • CO0147-058003- (Church),
  • CO0147-063---- (Castle),
  • CO0147-086---- (Historic town), and
  • CO0152-003---- (Fish palace).

Following the excavation of a number of trial holes in Crookhaven town centre, works began at the eastern end of the town at ITM 480211, 525504 (quayside in front of O’Sullivan’s Bar), and continued westward  along the main street to ITM 479897, 5252895 (the limit of the Zone of Notification for the Historic Town). Within the centre of the town of Crookhaven, trenching and pipelaying was largely contained within imported infill materials which underlay the road surface, with natural subsoil and bedrock only occasionally encountered, typically at a depth greater than 1.15m. West of the centre of the town of Crookhaven from ITM 48120, 525403, to ITM 479897, 5252895 pipelaying was largely confined to the existing water main trench.

Within the Zones of Notification for CO147-058001 (Graveyard), CO0147-058002- (Church), and CO0147-058003- (Church), much of the pipelaying was again within the trench previously excavated for the existing watermain.

Excavation and archaeological monitoring within the Zone of Notification for CO152-003- was confined to a single location (ITM 478808, 524699), where a pit was excavated to access the existing water main, for a new pipe to be inserted.

Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered during the course of monitoring at any location.
