Planning permission was granted to upgrade the existing Macroom Waste Water Treatment Plant in 2023. The treatment facility is located on the north-east side of the town close to the south-west bank of the River Sullane. The upgrade works were undertaken entirely within the existing facility in areas that had been significantly disturbed during the initial construction phase. The only undisturbed area was a greenfield site to the immediate west of the treatment plant which was identified as a suitable location for a temporary site compound. A full archaeological presence was maintained during the removal of topsoil removal at this location and no features or finds of significance were exposed.
