Monitoring of mechanical removal of stockpiled topsoil down to the previous sod level, at enclosure CL011-024----, Carrowcraheen, Tubber, Co. Clare, encountered nothing of archaeological significance.
In 2023, during agricultural improvement works (i.e. outside of the planning system), topsoil was stockpiled immediately adjacent to a Recorded Monument, CL011-024----. Following an inspection by an archaeologist from the National Monuments Service on 31 August 2023, work ceased immediately. The landowner was instructed that the stockpiles should be removed.
Licenced archaeological monitoring of the removal of the stockpiled topsoil to previous sod level was undertaken under continuous archaeological supervision in order to reinstate the previous profile of the monument. Particular care was taken to restore the profile of the previously visible depression around the embankment of the monument, apparently representing the remains of an enclosing ditch. The stockpiling and removal of the stockpiled of topsoil did not damage the monument.
