Archaeological monitoring was carried out on part of a water pipe laying scheme in the existing road network in Ennistymon village (Ennistimon townland), close to a church and graveyard (CL015-103001 & CL015-103002).

Monitoring was carried out on Church Hill Road going from west to east up towards the top of the hill where church and graveyard (CL015-015001&015002) and children’s burial ground CL015-144) are situated. An 82m length of trench was observed. The road surface and bedding overlay a fill layer comprising light brown silty clay and limestone with inclusions of 19th-century brick, glass and ceramic.

A small area of investigation was monitored at the junction of the second of the three northern laneways leading off Church Hill Road. The stratigraphy was identical to that recorded above.

On the most easterly of the three laneways, monitoring was carried out of 80m of trench from the laneway’s northern extent to the junction with Church Hill Road.

There was no evidence of any archaeological features, deposits or artefacts in any of the trenches excavated during the course of works.
