Monitoring was carried out during topsoil stripping relating to a residential development on land west of Church Road, Tulla, Co. Clare. The site had previously been subject to test trenching (21E0169).
Testing encountered nothing of archaeological significance. It was apparent before construction works began that site had been previously disturbed in the south-east corner and there was evidence of the ground having been artificially levelled. Modern domestic and agricultural refuse was visible on the surface of the site.
Across the site topsoil had a depth of between 0.2m and 0.4m, comprising mid- to dark brown humic loam with rooting and infrequent small stones, directly overlaying the natural, very pale yellow-brown glacial till. Limestone bedrock was visible at ground level in several area of the site. Buried refuse from the late 19th century onwards was discovered in the south-east corner of the development site, further demonstrating the extent of previous disturbance.
