Monitoring was proposed for excavation of open-cut trenches for pipe laying associated with a water mains rehabilitation scheme. Two parts of the scheme were proposed for monitoring: at the east of the scheme within the Zone of Notification (ZoN) of two Recorded Monuments (CL051-070001- and CL051-070002-, (both earthworks), and at the west of the scheme within the ZoN of CL051-064--- (enclosure).
Monitoring within the ZON of enclosure CL051-064--- did not encounter any archaeological features, deposits or artefacts. The stratigraphy observed was typically modern road surface levels, overlaying imported gravel fill layers which directly over lay the natural geology of limestone bedrock and glacial till.
Due to an oversight on the part of the contractor, pipe laying in the ZON of monuments CL051-070001- and CL051-070002- (both earthworks), was not monitored. Photographs of the works in this area provided by the contractor appear to show modern road surface and imported gravel fill levels directly overlaying bedrock. No features, deposits or finds of archaeological significance were identified.
