A metal detection survey (Licence No. 23R0455) and test trenching were carried out at Cabra Castle, Kingscourt, Co. Cavan. A previous geophysical survey (23R0455) failed to identify any anomalies. The test trenches were placed within the footprint of the proposed development. Each trench measured 2m in width, and in total 477m of linear trenching was excavated. The test trenches were
excavated down to the natural subsoil, or the top of possible archaeological features. The topsoil consisted of a brownish-grey clayey silt that measured between 0.22m and 0.42m in depth. The natural subsoil was mainly a brownish-orange silty clay with gravel in places.
No archaeological deposits, features or structures were identified in the four test trenches. Metal finds discovered during the metal detection survey were modern (late 19th century to 21st century in date). Only modern finds, including golf balls and the very occasional sherd of white glazed ceramic, were noted in the upcast topsoil of the excavated trenches.
The proposed development, will not impact on any archaeology. The assessment is now complete and no further work is recommended.
