Test excavations were undertaken at Kernanstown, Carlow on 29 February 2024. There are no Recorded Monuments listed on the Record of Monuments and Places (RMP) or the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) within, or in close proximity to, the proposed development site.

No archaeological objects, soils, deposits or features were uncovered during testing. The site had been previously stripped of topsoil within the past ten years and lain fallow, being used as a dumping area for concrete pipes, a large trailer, rubbish and the occasional gravel deposit.

Eighteen trenches were excavated, equating to 738m2 or 5.3% of the total area (which is 13,800m2) of the proposed development site; totalling 410 linear meters.

It was recommended that the townland boundary/northern site boundary be left in situ, and that licensed archaeological monitoring/inspections be conducted during site-preparation works and topsoil stripping within the development to ensure the townland boundary is protected.
