It is proposed to construct a residential dwelling on lands between 11 & 14 Kilmore Drive, Kilmore.
Test excavations identified the remains of a stone wall, gully and stone drain. The excavated remains point to archaeological activity on the site dating to the 19th century. This is consistent with the mapping information relating to the site. Both the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps show a former vernacular building in this area. Wall [03] appears to line up with the outer wall of on the south-western side of the building, however this would then place the gully [01] and drain [02] internally within the structure. This seems unlikely and is probably reflective of discrepancies within the mapping. A more likely scenario is that wall [03] represents the north-eastern side of the building and that the gully [01] provided protection from water running down the hill towards the site and that this was later replaced with the drain [02]. Following the excavation of the test trenches, a flint hollow scraper was recovered from the base of Trench two.
