A programme of Archaeological Monitoring of excavations associated with the construction of Temporary Electrical Transmission Towers at Mullycagh Upper, Dunlavin, Co. Wicklow was undertaken in compliance with Condition 5 of the Grant of Planning from Wicklow County Council.

The southernmost extent of the overall Planning Application boundary was a minimum of 25m outside the SMR Zone of Notification associated with a Mound – WI015-025.

The development generally comprised constructability/uprate trials of electrical transmission masts/towers; ancillary works included a self-contained pre-fabricated site office, temporary car park, storage areas and temporary works/access road, the latter formed by land-mats.

Two temporary masts were constructed, one with excavated foundation pits for the supporting legs and the other on piled supports; both were located in the south-western area of the site.  All site preparation works, including topsoil stripping, initial excavations of subsoil to a depth of 0.5m and for sheet-piles to a depth of 2.5m, was monitored.

No subsurface features of archaeological interest/potential were uncovered by the works. All spoil material was ‘raked-over’ in order to increase the chances of artefact recovery; however, nothing of interest was recovered.
