Archaeological testing was carried out over the course of 8 days between 9 and 18 January 2023. The trenches targeted recorded monuments (burnt mounds) WI013-066002 and WI013-066001, geophysical anomalies and open green space to fully investigate the archaeological potential of the site. Testing revealed 8 areas of archaeological significance, which have been designated as Archaeological Areas AA1-AA8. These comprise:

  • AA1 – Six burnt mounds, possible trough features and a waste pit.
  • AA2 – An oval enclosure ditch, internal features and isolated pit.
  • AA3 – A circular ringditch and possible pit features.
  • AA4 – A cluster of c. 12 unenclosed habitation features.
  • AA5 – Two burnt mounds and possible trough features.
  • AA6 – A cluster of unenclosed habitation features.
  • AA7 – A burnt mound.
  • AA8 – A waste pit.

A long irregular T- shaped ditch anomaly was identified in the geophysical survey (Anomaly 5) which has the potential to represent an earlier field system due to its irregular shape and the fact it is not shown on the historic mapping.
